While most of us associate sweating as a bothersome byproduct of working out, the benefits of sweating are actually unsurpassed. While most all of us know that sweating is what helps cool the body down during a hot summer day or an intense yoga class, sweating is showing to be beneficial for much more than that.

A 2011 study published in the Archives of Environmental and Contamination Toxicology showed that sweat is one of the best ways of naturally detoxing the body. The study showed: "Toxic elements were found to differing degrees in each of blood, urine, and sweat. Serum levels for most metals and metalloids were comparable with those found in other studies in the scientific literature. Many toxic elements appeared to be preferentially excreted through sweat. Presumably stored in tissues, some toxic elements readily identified in the perspiration of some participants were not found in their serum. Induced sweating appears to be a potential method for elimination of many toxic elements from the human body.”
Excretes Chemical Build-Up
Aside from eliminating heavy metals from the body, sweat is also beneficial in helping to eliminate hormone disrupting chemicals found in plastic known as BPA. A 2012 study showed BPA to be excreted in the sweat of some subjects in the study without BPA present in their urine. Phthalate (a chemical used to soften plastic) levels were found to be twice as high in a person’s sweat than in their urine according to a separate study performed by the same group.
Sweating, it seems, is the body’s preferred procedure for eliminating stored toxins and other nasty things present in the body. Not only fabulous for toxin removal, sweat is responsible for keeping the body healthy by fighting off germs. Sweat glands are constantly secreting a natural antibiotic known as dermcidin that has shown to help fight off sicknesses like the common cold and flu.
